Cate shielded her eyes from the sun’s glare as she and the other grommets surged into the stadium. Thunderous applause and a vociferous roar rolled around the arena. The stands were packed with thousands of hazy faces and muted colours. Something brushed past her head, ripping at her scalp. Her fingers came away warm and sticky, stained crimson. The grommet to her right smashed face first into the soil, an arrow protruding from his back. She slammed to the ground, flattening herself against the dirt floor.
The twang as arrows left their bows was followed by the wet, dull thunk as they found a target. Cate scrambled away from a lifeless body that collapsed across her legs and searched frantically for the source of the arrows.
Blindfolded Timesurfers lined the stone edge of the arena’s roof. The fletching feathers on the end of the arrow glinted over the curve of the archers’ bare shoulders. Black singlets pulled taut across their chests as they reloaded silver bows and fired with mechanical precision. An arrow grazed Cate’s arm. She scrambled over a motionless lion and ducked behind it. Multiple arrows protruded from its body. She pressed her cheek against its surprisingly soft belly. Blood seeped around the gaping holes in the grimy tan coat. It resembled a ghoulish Dalmatian.
Rhonda Sermon lives in the mostly sunny Perth, Western Australia with her husband and two children.
Her debut young adult urban fantasy novel Timesurfers was a finalist in the Young Adult category and overall runner up in the The Strongest Start 2012 Contest hosted by TheNextBigWriter.com.
On the good days, she adores writing, on the challenging days, it's still awesome.
Her two ragdoll cats can often be found helpfully walking over her keyboard, chasing her mouse or generally complaining loudly about the lack of priority their needs are being given.
She's a big Harry Potter fan, loves everything the talented Cassie Clare writes and her fav Aussie author is Jessica Shirvington. Her 11 and 13 year old children read ALL the time so she isalways on the lookout for new and exciting books.
